BOGOTA (Santa
Fé de Bogotá) is a city of amazing contrass. Dual displays of enormous
wealth and extreme poverty have existed here for centuries. Bogotá (a city
of more than 7 million people) has grown mostly just in the past 50 years. Its
growth has caused typical metropolitan problems like insufficient public transport,
air pollution and crime, including a major drug trade with occasional acts of
political violence. In recent years, progress has been made in fixing some of
those problems. A recent survey of native inhabitants indicates that many feel
that the political situation may be getting worse in Colombia but conditions are
improving in Bogotá.
